An energy efficiency of homes project is currently being undertaken by Galway City Council.

The EU NetZeroCities Pilot Cities Programme is a European-funded initiative aimed at supporting cities to reduce their carbon emissions, with Galway City set to focus their NetZeroCities project on a number of ideas aimed at encouraging homeowners to retrofit their homes.

These ideas are being trialled in the city's Decarbonisation Zone, which covers the areas of Westside, Shantalla, Rahoon and Newcastle.  

A community one-stop-shop, known as the Warm Home Hub, has been established in Westside to help guide households in the Decarbonisation Zone through the retrofit process.

In addition to providing information on available grants, cost saving calculations and retrofit options for the home, the Warm Home Hub are offering free BER assessments to households that are interested in finding out more about the energy efficiency of their home.  

Sharon Carroll of Galway City Council, who are the lead partner in Galway's NetZeroCities project, said: "Knowing the BER rating of your home is key to understanding the energy efficiency of your home and can be used to help identify areas where energy efficiency improvements can be made.

"As part of the support service offered by the Warm Home Hub, free BER assessments are being provided to households considering retrofit in the Galway City Decarbonisation Zone.

"This is an excellent opportunity for households to learn more about how they use energy in their homes and what energy upgrade options will be best for them."
