Northern Ireland company Farrans Construction is making significant progress on a vital project at Barsham Water Treatment Works for Essex and Suffolk Water.
The initiative involves designing, supplying, and installing a new bores treatment stream to enhance water quality and resilience for customers.
The project is part of Essex and Suffolk Water's £49.3 million investment aimed at ensuring a dependable supply of clean, clear drinking water for decades to come.
Key components of the project include constructing an interstage pumping station, a contact tank for existing river flow treatment, a 20-million-litre covered storage reservoir, and a high-lift pumping station to manage combined water flows. The upgraded plant will have the capacity to treat the full output of the primary abstraction bores, as well as an emergency chalk bore, ensuring the system is robust enough to meet future demands.
Barsham Water Treatment Works plays a crucial role in supplying drinking water to approximately 75,000 customers in Suffolk and parts of Essex. Once completed, the improvements will benefit customers across a wide area, including Beccles, Bungay, Lowestoft, and Southwold.
Work began in summer 2023 and is on track for completion by spring 2025, marking a milestone in the region's water infrastructure enhancement efforts.
