Both the Nenagh and Thurles Regional Water Supplies in County Tipperary have been removed from the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) list of vulnerable water supplies.
The removals follow works from Uisce Éireann, which included upgrading the Coolbawn water treatment plant, serving over 15,000 customers across Nenagh, Silvermines, Portroe, Gortgarry, Puckaun, Urra, Dromineer, Toomevara, Dolla and Newtown, to provide a more robust and resilient disinfection system.
Meanwhile the Thurles water treatment plant serving 13,000 customers across Thurles, Ballycahill, Littleton, Horse & Jockey, Holycross, Bouladuff, Dovea, Borrisoleigh and Drom underwent upgrades to process controls to ensure continued delivery of a safe and reliable water supply for local homes and businesses.
Pat Duggan, Regional Drinking Water Compliance Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: "At Uisce Éireann we are fully committed to identifying and addressing risks to drinking water quality.
"Our key focus remains the protection of public health through the provision of safe, clean and secure water supplies for local communities. These works in Thurles and Nenagh ensure ongoing compliance with drinking water regulations and significantly reduce the risk of future water quality issues."
Pat continued: "It has been an important milestone to complete the works to ensure the continued provision of a safe and reliable water supply for approximately 28,000 people across the wider Thurles and Nenagh areas.
"With the works now complete this ensures the continued delivery of safe, clean drinking water to local homes and businesses."
