Contractor Tony Patterson Sportsground has commenced works on the site of the Mid Ulster Sports Arena (MUSA) in Cookstown, County Tyrone.
The MUSA project was made possible through a £1.2m investment from Sport NI's National Lottery Funded Multi Facility Fund and was designed by Mid Ulster firm McGurk Architects.
It will deliver a Track Mark accredited athletics facility including an 8-lane track, and a FIFA accredited 3G synthetic surface for association football. Other additions will include floodlighting, fencing, and ancillary works.
Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Eugene McConnell, said: "We are grateful to Sport NI and the National Lottery funded Multi Facility Fund for this significant investment, and it's great to see the works started on this transformative project.
"By the autumn, the completed inclusive facilities will by helping our local communities to access opportunities to participate more fully in activity, especially in athletics and football, thereby improving the physical and mental health and well-being of Mid Ulster residents."
Sport NI has worked closely with Mid Ulster District Council and Disability Sport Northern Ireland to ensure the design is fully inclusive and meets the requirements of the Inclusive Sports Facility Guidelines.
