Limerick City and County Council has welcomed the announcement of over €83 million in funding allocated for crucial road projects across the county.
The significant investment, part of a national roads funding package of €633 million announced by Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien, will see major progress on key infrastructure developments.
The largest portion of the funding, almost €70 million, has been earmarked for the Adare bypass. This project involves the construction of 7 km of new motorway from Croagh to Adare, including the building of two new railway bridges. Authorities anticipate that the bypass will be completed in advance of the prestigious 2027 Ryder Cup, which is set to be held in Adare.
In addition to the Adare bypass, Limerick has also secured €4.5 million for the Limerick to Cork motorway project and €7.6 million for various National Primary and Secondary roads throughout the county. These additional funds will support essential maintenance and safety improvements at several key locations, including Barnagh, Abbeyfeale, Adare, Murphy's Cross, O’Rourke’s Cross, Pallasgreen, Grange Cross, and Ward’s Cross. The works will include pavement renewals and verge improvements, ensuring the continued safety and efficiency of the road network.
Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, expressed his satisfaction with the funding allocation, stating: "I welcome the allocation announced by the department for Limerick today. The funding will copper fasten the progression of the Adare Bypass being in place by Autumn 2027, which is a staple of the Mayoral Programme. Continued support for the project will be essential in order to meet the tight deadlines required for the Ryder Cup." He also highlighted the importance of progressing the road to Foynes to prepare the region for offshore wind facilities.
Priomh Comhairleoir, Councillor Dan McSweeney, echoed the Mayor’s sentiments, noting: "This substantial funding allocation is a testament to the government's commitment to enhancing our infrastructure and supporting the growth and development of Limerick. The Adare bypass, along with other vital road projects, will not only improve connectivity and safety but also ensure that our region is well-prepared for the prestigious Ryder Cup in 2027."
Director General of Limerick City and County Council, Dr Pat Daly, emphasised the strategic importance of the funding, stating: "It’s great to have confirmation of this funding that will allow us to drive on with this critical piece of infrastructure. The target for completion is ahead of the Ryder Cup in 2027 but the improvements to our roads infrastructure will have lasting benefits for Limerick and the region."
Director of Service, Travel and Transport Strategy at Limerick City and County Council, Hugh McGrath, also welcomed the announcement, highlighting the government’s commitment to completing the Adare bypass in time for the Ryder Cup. He added: “We also welcome the €4.5m grant for NM20 to allow for continued progression of the planning stages of this Strategically important Inter City infrastructure as well as the funds to progress the Newcastlewest and Abbeyfeale bypass projects."
Limerick City and County Council has reiterated its commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all residents through improved infrastructure and looks forward to the positive impact these projects will have on the region.
