Cork County Council has been awarded more than €72,000 through the Historic Structures Fund to support the repair and preservation of Kinsale Museum.

The funding, provided by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage's National Built Heritage Service (NBHS), will facilitate essential restoration work, including repairs to internal plaster, external ironmongery, masonry walls and drainage. Additionally, the clock on the building's front elevation will be restored to working order.

Located in the heart of Kinsale on Market Street, the museum is housed in a 400-year-old former market house and courthouse. Built in 1610 and serving as a courthouse from 1705, it played a significant role in history, including hosting the inquest into the 1915 sinking of the HMS Lusitania.

The museum's unique facade, which features a mix of materials adding texture and visual interest, retains key historical elements such as its clock and cupola. Due to its prominent location, the building is particularly vulnerable to storm damage. The planned restoration works aim to strengthen its resilience against such environmental challenges while preserving its architectural integrity.
