Uisce Éireann is set to begin a project to upgrade the water network in Athlone, County Westmeath, aimed at supporting future development and enhancing the capacity and performance of the existing water infrastructure in the Midlands town.
The works will involve the upgrade and upsizing of over 2.5 kilometres of water mains in the Coosan, Cornamagh Road, and Brawny Road areas. Site investigation works have already commenced, with the main construction phase scheduled to begin in early summer. The project is expected to take approximately six months to complete and will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to the local community. Coffey Construction has been contracted by Uisce Éireann to undertake the works.
Donal O'Connor, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, emphasised the benefits of the upgrades for Athlone: "These upgrades will ensure that the water network is fit for purpose to support sustainable growth and development while also improving the resilience of the drinking water network enabling communities to thrive. We'd like to thank the people of Athlone in advance for their patience and support as we finalise the design and carry out these critical works."
The vital upgrades are being delivered through Uisce Éireann's Growth and Development Programme, a national initiative focused on targeted investment to increase the capacity of water and wastewater infrastructure. This programme aims to enable social and economic growth, including the delivery of essential housing.
