Cork City Council marked a milestone with the official opening of the Marina Promenade by Taoiseach Micheál Martin, T.D.
The project, funded by the National Transport Authority, builds on the successful pedestrianisation of the Marina during the Covid period, transforming it into a popular recreational route for walkers, runners, and cyclists of all ages.
Construction of the new 1.8km long amenity space began in late 2023 and concluded in late 2024. The project delivered a 5.5-metre-wide corridor for pedestrians and cyclists, complemented by adjoining plazas, improved connections to Marina Park, and a range of features including age-friendly seating, riverside viewing balconies, enhanced landscaping, and environmentally sensitive public lighting. Historic stone walls along the promenade were cleaned and restored, while formal tree planting was preserved. The area now boasts approximately 60,000 blooming bulbs and 34 newly planted trees.
The revitalisation of the Marina Promenade is a key element in the broader redevelopment plans for Cork Docklands, one of the country’s largest regeneration projects. With Phase 1 of Marina Park (covering 14 acres) already open since 2022, Phases 2 and 3—adding an additional 56 acres—are expected to welcome the public in late 2025.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin T.D. said: "This is an exciting day for Cork as we officially open the Marina Promenade, which we can already see is extraordinarily popular with local communities, schools, sports groups, and visitors to Cork City alike. This project is part of a suite of investments across Cork City that demonstrate Government's commitment to creating and developing a sustainable way of living for future generations."
