Residents of Dromcummer in Banteer can expect a more secure and reliable water supply as Uisce Éireann announces an upgrade to the area's water network.
The project, prioritised under the national Leakage Reduction Programme, aims to tackle persistent leakage issues and strengthen the local infrastructure.
The works will involve replacing more than 3.8 kilometres of ageing, burst-prone water mains with modern, durable piping. This section of the upgrade will take place along the N72 in Dromcummer, with construction scheduled to begin in mid-April and continue until June 2025.
Once complete, the new infrastructure will provide customers with a more consistent water supply and reduce service disruptions that have affected the area in recent years.
Commenting on the project, Jack Cronin of Uisce Éireann said: "Old and damaged water mains remain a huge source of leakage and continue to impact communities right across Ireland, causing low pressure and supply disruption. Replacing these old water mains in poor condition will eliminate existing leaks and significantly reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground. By prioritising these upgrades, we are helping communities like Dromcummer, Banteer to thrive. We would like to thank local residents for their cooperation and patience as we carry out these essential works."
To minimise the impact on the community, the works will be carried out in short sections with traffic management measures in place. A Stop/Go system will operate during the day, while an automated traffic light system will be used at night. Access for local and emergency vehicles will be maintained throughout the project.
While the works may necessitate brief water supply interruptions, customers will receive at least 48 hours' notice before any planned disruptions.
Ward and Burke Construction Ltd. has been appointed to carry out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
