Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has reaffirmed her unwavering commitment to the delivery of the long-awaited A5 Western Corridor project.
Speaking after a meeting with local elected representatives Orflaith Begley MP for West Tyrone, and local MLAs Nicola Brogan and Maoliosa McHugh, Minister Kimmins emphasised the critical importance of the scheme.
Minister Kimmins said: "I remain fully committed to the delivery of this long-awaited and significant project. The development of a modern fit for purpose dual carriageway will first and foremost save lives which is at the forefront of all our minds."
The Minister also highlighted the broader benefits the project would bring to the region, including improved north-south connectivity, addressing regional imbalance, and boosting the wider economy. She expressed her hope for swift progress on the "hugely important project" to realise its life-saving potential and other critical advantages.
The A5 Western Transport Corridor (A5WTC) is a flagship infrastructure project for the Northern Ireland Executive, aiming to deliver 85 kilometres of new, high-standard dual carriageway between New Buildings and the border south of Aughnacloy. Following Executive agreement on 2nd October 2024, the then Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd announced the decision to proceed with the section of the A5 Western Transport Corridor project between south of Strabane and Ballygawley, representing 55 of the total 85km length. The latest statement from Minister Kimmins underscores the ongoing commitment to this significant infrastructure development.
