Farrans has been named a finalist in the prestigious Bridge Contractor of the Year category at the NCE Bridges Awards 2025.
The awards ceremony will take place on 17 July at the Hilton Bankside in London.
The recognition follows a landmark year for Farrans, which saw the successful delivery of three major moving bridge projects across the UK, two of which, the Gull Wing in Suffolk and the Govan-Partick Bridge in Glasgow, opened on the same day in September 2024.
Gull Wing
Opened by The Princess Royal, Gull Wing is a feat of complex civil engineering and now holds the title of the world's largest rolling bascule bridge. Built for Suffolk County Council, the structure pushes the boundaries of hydraulic engineering, operating with a 386-tonne concrete counterweight housed in twin steel J-beams. The bridge opens in 116 seconds and closes in 106 seconds, performing up to 10 cycles daily throughout its projected 120-year lifespan.
Govan to Partick Bridge
Also completed in September 2024, the Govan-Partick Bridge in Glasgow re-establishes a historic crossing over the River Clyde. Delivered on time and on budget for Glasgow City Council, the 99-metre cable-stayed swing bridge includes a 650-tonne moving span and a 45-tonne fixed section, making it one of Europe’s longest opening pedestrian crossings.
Herring Bridge
A joint venture between BAM and Farrans (BFJV), the Herring Bridge project in Great Yarmouth stands as one of Norfolk County Council’s most significant civil engineering undertakings. The scheme involved the construction of a double leaf bascule bridge and a 2.8km upgrade to highway infrastructure. Completed within the £121 million budget, the project has substantially eased local traffic congestion and diverted HGVs away from town centres.
