Uisce Éireann has commenced an extensive upgrade of the underground wastewater infrastructure in Lismore to improve the reliability of the network and prevent sewer flooding.
The project, which is part of Uisce Éireann's Wastewater Below Ground Programme, involves upgrading the existing wastewater system and constructing a new surface water outfall pipe. Once complete, the improvements will help prevent sewage spillages during heavy rainfall, particularly along the N72 and at a problematic manhole near the St. Declan's walkway.
The works are expected to be complete by the end of May 2025.
Ger Mullally, Project Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: "This key project will help support Lismore's future development. It will benefit the environment and deliver a reliable, sustainable, high-quality service to the people of Lismore and those visiting the town. We would like to thank the community in advance for their cooperation and patience while we complete these necessary upgrades."
Work will be carried out along the N72, starting from the St. Declan's Walkway to the Aglish (Lady Louisa Walk) entrance from the N72. The entrance to the walkway will be closed from Friday, 18 April, and will reopen on Monday, 12 May. Walkers will need to use the Roundhill entrance to access the walkway during this time.
Additional works will take place opposite the Lismore House Hotel, Lismore Gardens car park, and the Ferry Lane Junction. To ensure safety during the works, a traffic management plan, including a stop/go system, will be in place. Local and emergency access will be maintained throughout the project.
Shareridge has been appointed to carry out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
