Uisce Éireann has announced plans to upgrade 2 kilometres of the water network in Waterford City to facilitate future growth and development in the area. The project aims to enhance both the capacity and the overall performance of the existing water infrastructure.
The planned works involve the upgrade and upsizing of water mains along several key routes in the city. These include Vincent White Road, the R686 as far as Kingsmeadow Roundabout, the R680 from Kingsmeadow Roundabout to the junction of the R680 Cork Road and Claremont Road, and from that junction to the intersection of Ballybeg Drive and the Ballybeg Park housing estate.
Site investigation works commenced today and are expected to take approximately three weeks. The data gathered during this phase will be crucial in informing the detailed designs for the planned upgrades. Following the completion of the site investigations, Uisce Éireann will proceed with the necessary statutory and regulatory approvals for the new infrastructure required to improve the city's water network.
Donal O'Connor, programme manager with Uisce Éireann, highlighted the benefits of the upcoming upgrades for Waterford City. "These upgrades will ensure that the water network is fit for purpose, supporting sustainable growth and development," he said. "They will also enhance the resilience of the drinking water network, allowing communities to thrive. We would like to thank the people of Waterford City in advance for their patience and support as we finalise the design and carry out these essential works."
The vital infrastructure improvements are being delivered through Uisce Éireann’s national Growth and Development Programme. This initiative focuses on strategic investment in water and wastewater infrastructure to support social and economic progress, including the provision of much-needed housing.
Shareridge has been contracted by Uisce Éireann to carry out the works. Uisce Éireann has committed to keeping the local community informed as the specific details of the project are finalised.
