Clooney Cannon Project Earns Planning Award Nod

Derry City and Strabane District Council has been named a finalist in the RTPI Northern Ireland Awards for Planning Excellence 2025, under the Excellence in Planning for Heritage and Culture category, for its work on the Clooney Terrace Cannon Regeneration Project.

The project involved the transformation of the historic Clooney Cannon site into a public space that respects and enhances local heritage. Delivered in partnership with Bonds Street Community Association and Clooney All Saints Church of Ireland, the scheme has revitalised a site of cultural and historical importance in the Waterside area.

Completed in 2024, the £215,000 project included the restoration of the Crimean War-era cannon, new seating, planting, lighting, and interpretive signage. A new pathway links the cannon site to the adjacent church garden, with improved access, boundary railings, and sympathetic lighting to highlight both heritage assets. The work was fully funded by the Department for Communities (DfC).

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Ruairí McHugh, welcomed the news of the nomination: "The Clooney Cannon project not only honours an important aspect of our shared history but also creates a welcoming and engaging public space that contributes to the cultural fabric of the city. We’re proud to see our efforts acknowledged at a regional level."

The regeneration aligns with wider goals for heritage-led regeneration and has already made a positive impact on the community and local environment.

Tony Monaghan, Regeneration Manager at Derry City and Strabane District Council, added: "Being shortlisted for this award is a fantastic achievement and reflects the dedication and professionalism of our regeneration team. I want to sincerely thank our staff, community partners, other stakeholders and our funder DfC who worked tirelessly to bring this project to life. It's incredibly rewarding to see their efforts recognised in such a meaningful way."

The RTPI Awards celebrate planning projects that demonstrate strong leadership, sustainable design, and community benefit. Winners will be announced at the Welcome Celebration Event on June 9 at Malone House, Belfast.
