Uisce Éireann has announced a major milestone in the Glenary water supply upgrade, with customers now being directly served from the local reservoir following the successful completion of essential works on the network.
The new trunk main connection ensures that residents will now benefit from approximately 24 hours of water storage in the event of any future outages at the Glenary Water Treatment Plant (WTP).
The infrastructure improvement is part of a wider €10 million investment in the region’s water supply, which includes a major upgrade to the Glenary treatment facility. The project, being delivered by Ward & Burke on behalf of Uisce Éireann, is on track for completion in 2026.
John Hickey, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: "Works to complete the connection of the existing reservoir to the Glenary WTP via a new 300mm trunk main are complete and we’ll continue to monitor the network over the coming weeks. There may be further adjustments to our processes as we progress but customers on this supply are now being served directly from the reservoir. The newly completed trunk main connection means customers will benefit from up to 24-hours of water storage in the event of any future outages at the treatment plant. The major upgrade of the plant, which is well underway, will further strengthen the resilience of the supply into the future."
The upgrade to the Glenary plant includes significant enhancements to its treatment processes, such as improved flocculation and filtration systems. Other key elements of the works involve the installation of new intake screens, chambers, and mixers, as well as a disinfection system upgrade. An overhaul of the plant's electrical systems and monitoring infrastructure is also underway.
