Ward and Burke Construction Ltd will commence works next week to upgrade the water infrastructure in Cork City, on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
As part of the works, over four kilometres of decades-old cast iron water mains will be decommissioned from the Lough to Capwell towards South Douglas Road and new larger, modern pipes will be installed. The project will improve water quality, address bursts and leakage and increase the supply capacity of the network to support sustainable growth and development in the Docklands area of the city.
Brian McCarthy, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: "Uisce Éireann continues to invest in strengthening the water supply network in Cork City. This project, along with the upgrade works completed on the South Quays earlier this year, will provide additional capacity to support future residential and commercial development in the Docklands area - enabling the city to thrive.
"In addition, this is the third significant mains replacement project commenced this year in Cork City, as we continue to address water quality and discolouration reports. Works are already underway in Gurranabraher and on the Douglas Road."
The works will commence on June 23 and take place in the following areas: Pearse Road, Curragh Road and South Douglas Road. Traffic management will be in place in the form of a stop / go system and localised road closures to facilitate the scheme.
The project is expected to be completed in Spring 2026.
