SDLP Infrastructure Spokesperson Mark H Durkan MLA has criticised the Infrastructure Minister for failing to address the impact of long-term underinvestment in Northern Ireland’s water infrastructure.
His comments follow an Assembly statement by Minister Liz Kimmins on Tuesday, providing an update on an investigation into NI Water’s reported budget overspend.
Foyle MLA Mr Durkan said: "Every government body must live within its means and that includes NI Water. While we accept resources are limited, the Infrastructure Minister continues to ignore the scale of the crisis and the consequences for people across the North.
"The current budget is clearly not enough to tackle our outdated wastewater infrastructure. Vital housing developments are being delayed and sewage is entering our waterways, with devastating impacts on our environment and public health.
"We can already see, feel and smell the impact of underinvestment in NI Water all around us. Unless the Minister delivers the funding required, these problems will only get worse."
Durkan has repeatedly raised concerns over the strain on NI Water services and the resulting effects on housing, environmental protection, and public wellbeing. The SDLP is urging the Department for Infrastructure to prioritise long-term funding solutions to avoid further deterioration.
