The Road Construction Divisions project on Cork Hill in Dublin City is currently underway, local council has announced.
The initiative includes the lifting and relaying of 620 square metres of heritage cobbles as well as the replacement of the existing six-inch cast iron water main, which dates back to 1900, and installation of new ducting to facilitate advanced communication technologies within City Hall.
The aim of the project is to preserve the unique character of the cobbles yet use high-strength modern technologies to have a strong stable structure.
In addition to the cobblestone work, the junction at Castle Street and Lord Edward Street will be resurfaced. This project is being completed ahead of the election of the new Uachtarán na h'Eireann, as Cork Hill serves as the ceremonial entrance to Dublin Castle.
