Maghera Fire Station has officially unveiled its upgraded facilities following a significant £772,500 investment in refurbishment by the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS).

The extensive modernisation project has brought the station, originally constructed in 1969, up to current operational and safety standards, securing its vital role within the local community.

The refurbishment works began in August 2024 and were completed in April 2025, representing a substantial investment in local fire and rescue infrastructure. The upgrades ensure the station is fit for purpose for many years ahead. Improvements include a fully renewed mechanical and electrical infrastructure, enhanced welfare facilities, and a bespoke kit room. In line with sustainability objectives, the station has also been equipped with solar photovoltaic (PV) panels.

NIFRS Western Area Commander David Doherty welcomed the completion of the works. He said: "The completion of this refurbishment at Maghera Fire Station marks a significant step forward in our ongoing commitment to investing in our infrastructure and ensuring the safety, wellbeing and operational readiness of our Firefighters. Built in 1969, this Station has been proudly serving the community for over 5 decades. These upgrades not only enhance the working environment for our Firefighters but also ensure we are better equipped to serve and protect the local community."

Commander Doherty also extended gratitude for local support. "Maghera Fire Station is a cornerstone of the local community, protecting and serving the local people. We are immensely grateful to everyone who contributed to this project and to the local community for their continued trust and backing of their Fire & Rescue Service. Together we are helping to make Northern Ireland a safer place."
