The Coirib go Cósta Galway City Flood Relief Scheme is currently progressing through the design and consultation phase. The objective of the scheme is to assess, design, and deliver flood protection infrastructure for Galway City that meets a defined Standard of Protection. The works will address flood risk using technically robust, socially and environmentally acceptable, and cost-effective solutions.
Public consultation on the proposed options is underway, with strong attendance at recent public information events held in Salthill and the city centre.
On Friday, June 27, Kevin 'Boxer' Moran TD, Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW), and Noel Grealish TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, met with senior representatives from Galway City Council to review progress on the scheme.
Coirib go Cósta is identified as a key infrastructure priority in Galway City Council's submission to the Programme for Government. The project is also aligned with the National Planning Framework and National Development Plan, supporting long-term resilience and growth for the city.
Coirib go Cósta is primarily focused on the management of flood risk, however, Galway City Council will strive to ensure that the design of any measures - in particular structural measures - recognise the distinctive character of Galway city. All works will include creative landscape and architectural solutions, which in addition to addressing flood risk management, will enhance the urban landscape.
Ministers Moran and Grealish welcomed the progress and public engagement to date, and both emphasised the importance of moving the scheme to delivery as soon as possible.
Feedback on the current public consultation is welcome by July 18. Full details of the project are available at www.CoiribgoCosta.ie.
