Glas Civil Engineering Ltd has commenced construction on the new Tramore Ring Road Active Travel Scheme in County Waterford.
The scheme is being delivered by Waterford City and County Council, with approximately €5.5 million in funding allocated for its construction by the National Transport Authority.
The project includes a dedicated two-way cycle track, safer junctions for pedestrians and cyclists, new pedestrian crossings, and improved links to existing footpaths and nearby housing estates. The scheme is designed to make walking, cycling and other forms of active travel safer, more convenient, and more appealing for people of all ages and abilities.
Speaking at the commencement of works, the newly elected Mayor of Waterford City and County Council, Cllr Séamus Ryan, said: "The Tramore Ring Road Active Travel Scheme is a very positive and progressive project for Tramore. Not only will it encourage active travel and healthy lifestyles, but it will also improve safety and accessibility for all road users. It's a welcome investment in the town's future and the wellbeing of our community."
Michael Murphy, Active Travel Senior Engineer at Waterford City and County Council, added: "The Tramore Ring Road Active Travel Scheme is part of an active travel network of routes being delivered by the local authority aimed at making walking and cycling attractive modes of transport. The dedicated cycling infrastructure will be a huge boost for vulnerable road users and will encourage more people to travel in an active manner."
The works will span the Tramore Ring Road and the urban area of the Fenor Road, with completion expected within 18 months. A traffic management system will be in place during the works, with updates available via Waterford Council’s MapAlerter service and website.
