Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced that a major £694,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme will begin on Monday 28 July 2025, targeting key sections of Charles Street and Dungannon Road in Portadown.
The project will involve the asphalt resurfacing of approximately 1.3 kilometres of road, aiming to improve the surface texture, enhance road markings, and install updated warning signage to increase safety for all road users.
Minister Kimmins said: "This is a substantial investment for the Portadown area which will deliver significant benefits for local businesses, residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. This work will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of local residents, businesses and those travelling in the Portadown area. Work is expected to be substantially completed by 12 September 2025. I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."
To ensure the safe delivery of the scheme, overnight road closures will be in place from Monday 28 July to Saturday 23 August 2025. Roads will remain open during Saturday and Sunday nights.
In addition, lane closures will be in effect daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, beginning on 28 July and continuing until the expected completion date of Friday 12 September 2025. Local access, including for emergency vehicles, will be maintained throughout the duration of the works.
To manage traffic during the closures, two diversion routes will be in operation:
Diversion Route 1: A4 Dungannon Road, A4 Birches Roundabout, M1 Motorway, M12 Ballynacor Interchange, M12 Motorway, A3 Kernan Loop, A3 Northway, and A4 Corcrain Road.
Diversion Route 2: B28 Moy Road, B131 Teagy Road, B131 Derrycoose Road, B131 Blackisland Road, M1 Motorway, M12 Ballynacor Interchange, M12 Motorway, A3 Kernan Loop, A3 Northway, and A4 Corcrain Road.
The Department for Infrastructure has carefully scheduled the works and traffic management to reduce disruption as much as possible. However, road users are advised to plan for potential delays, allow extra time for journeys, and follow all temporary traffic restrictions.
Subject to favourable weather conditions, the works are scheduled to be substantially completed by Friday 12 September 2025.
