Latest technological innovation from Komatsu – one that McHale Plant Sales director, Denis McGrath notes "has features that, in time, could trickle-down to other machines in their extensive portfolio" – is their Power Agnostic (PA) 930E haul truck currently being developed by them in collaboration with Swedish mining giant Boliden.
Unlikely to appear in Ireland for some time to come, if at all, the PA 930E is currently being officially deployed at Boliden's Aitik mine in Gallivare, Sweden – one of Europe's largest and most productive open-pit copper mines – where it will undertake a 12-months period of field trials and mine site testing.
The first diesel trolley truck in Komatsu's new power agnostic series, the PA930E has garnered significant attention for its modular, future-forward design, and its host of high-tech features said by Komatsu to mark a major step forward in the journey towards decarbonising surface mining operations.
Built on Komatsu's new modular platform, the PA930E haul truck offers flexibility and future proofing that enables customers to begin with diesel power and later transition to alternative energy sources such as battery-electric or hydrogen fuel cell technology.
Depending on operational needs, technology readiness, and pace of decarbonisation efforts, its integration of diesel trolley assist functionality further enhances performance by reducing fuel consumption and emissions whilst paving the way for a future electrified mine.
In operational terms, whilst being diesel powered, the PA930E can gain from the additional power and performance that electricity can deliver when, trolly-like, it can achieve savings and eliminate down-mine emissions by – much in the style of a Belfast trolly bus of yesteryear – attaching itself to overhead electric power cables during its descent into and fully-loaded exit climb from the mine.
As a founding member of Komatsu's Greenhouse Gas Alliance, Boliden is reinforcing its commitment to a more sustainable future. The upcoming trial will enable Komatsu and Boliden to gather detailed operational lessons and insights to advance haulage decarbonisation efforts further.
By integrating the PA 930E into their fleet during its commissioning and test period, Boliden is advancing its ambition to be "at the forefront of sustainable mining," Boliden Project Manager, Jonas Ranggard said.

Supporting both companies' shared ambition to decarbonise mining operations and drive progress towards a lower-emission future, the PA930E is said by Komatsu to represent a meaningful step towards zero-emission mining.
"Turning vision into reality, it will play a critical role in guiding future advancements in Komatsu's power-agnostic line-up," the company said.
