Applications are now open for the 2026 Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) in Galway.
The scheme provides financial support for conservation works on a range of historic structures, including: Protected Structures listed on the Galway City Record; Buildings within the city's 11 Architectural Conservation Areas (ACAs); Vernacular buildings (protected, in ACAs, or otherwise); and historic shopfronts.
Grants of between €2,500 and €50,000 are available, covering up to 80% of eligible project costs. A separate stream is also available for minor repairs and routine maintenance. However, most awards are likely to fall below the 80% maximum.
All funded works must meet planning and regulatory requirements, and must be completed by October 2026. Successful applicants will be notified in January 2026.
Past BHIS projects in Galway have supported a wide range of works, including works to roofs (including thatch), brickwork, iron railings, windows (including the installation of new windows), doors, internal plasterwork, shopfronts, stained glass, wall repairs, external rendering and more. All works have been carried out to best conservation practice to ensure that the structures are enhanced and protected.
The scheme is administered by Galway City Council on behalf of the Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage.
Applications must include a completed Application Form A and method statement for the works.
Applications must be submitted by 4pm on Friday, September 26, to [email protected].
