Northern Ireland-headquartered McLaughlin & Harvey is set to begin marine piling works later this month on a new container berth at London Gateway Port.
The project, being delivered on behalf of DP World, is part of a £350 million investment to expand capacity at the Thames-based logistics hub.
A key element of the works is the construction of a new quay wall, which will involve the installation of large steel tubular piles using a combination of vibratory and impact hammer techniques. The piling works are scheduled to start on or around August 22 and are expected to continue for approximately 18 months, subject to weather and tidal conditions.
This fifth berth will enable the port to handle more ultra-large container vessels, helping to strengthen supply chain resilience and support long-term growth in the UK's freight infrastructure.
Direct measures to mitigate against the noise generated from the piling works include:
• A non-metallic pad being used between the hammer and head of the pile;
• No more than six cumulative hours of hammering in each 24-hour day;
• Marine pile driving must not take place between the hours of 9pm and 7am;
• Piling will not start at weekends until 8am Saturday and 10am Sunday until 9pm;
• Noise monitors set up inside and outside the site boundary to continuously monitor and record noise levels to ensure compliance with the Section 61 limits set by the local authority.
Residents and stakeholders with concerns about the works can contact the site team directly on 07771 345744 or by email at [email protected].
