A road closure has been announced to facilitate ongoing works to upgrade the water network in Athlone, Uisce Éireann has announced.

Works are currently progressing well along Cartrontroy Road, however, as part of the next stage of the pipelaying project, which will improve the capacity and performance of the existing water network, a section of Coosan Road within the town will be closed from Monday, August 18 to Friday, October 17.

Diversion routes will be in place to facilitate the temporary road closure, which has been approved by Westmeath County Council, and these will be clearly signposted. Pedestrian access and local access will be maintained throughout the works.

Commenting on the benefits of the upgrades to the town of Athlone, Padraig Hanly, Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: "These upgrades will ensure that the water network is fit for purpose to support sustainable growth and development while also improving the resilience of the drinking water network enabling communities to thrive. We'd like to thank the people of Athlone in advance for their patience and support as we carry out these critical works."

These vital upgrades are being delivered through Uisce Éireann's Growth and Development Programme, a national programme of targeted investment to increase the capacity of water and wastewater infrastructure to enable social and economic growth, including the delivery of essential housing.
