A new research report on timber construction has been officially launched, outlining over €8 million worth of studies into structural performance, environmental impact, material developments and advances in engineered wood products.

The report, Pioneering Research and Innovation for Timber and Wood-Based Products in Ireland, was launched by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon TD, alongside Ministers of State Michael Healy-Rae TD and Noel Grealish TD.

Funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, the research has been carried out by Irish institutions to provide the construction sector with the knowledge, technology and insights needed to expand the use of timber in building projects. Minister Heydon commented: "My Department funds this research in order to produce the knowledge, insights and technology needed to address evolving strategic, policy and industry needs. This investment in research and innovation reflects the continued government support for utilising our forest resource and creating a renewable building environment."

The Timber in Construction Steering Group's work showcases the practical applications of research for both policy and industry, with findings expected to strengthen the adoption of timber construction in Ireland. Minister Healy-Rae noted that Ireland's sawmilling and forest sectors have developed into advanced processing industries through innovation and past research, adding that continued investment will enhance sustainability, efficiency and competitiveness.

Meanwhile, Minister Grealish emphasised that the publication summarises years of targeted research into timber and wood-based products, with results that have direct relevance to construction. The report details innovations in engineered timber, the environmental benefits of timber use, and new approaches to maximising the value of Ireland's forest resources.
