An official sod-turning ceremony has marked the commencement of a construction project at Enniscorthy Sports Hub in County Wexford.
The project, supported by €450,000 under the government's Large-Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF), will see the upgrade of the existing IAAF athletics facility of the Enniscorthy Hub to include the provision of a sports amenity building containing a multi-purpose area, two dressing rooms, public toilet facilities and kitchenette, as well as construction of a throwing cage for discus and hammer. It will also serve as an educational hub for coaches, athletes and teachers.
Tánaiste Simon Harris TD welcomed the opportunity to turn the first sod on the project, joined by Patrick O'Donovan TD, Minister for Culture, Communications & Sport, and by Minister for Housing, Heritage and Local Government, James Browne TD.
Tánaiste Simon Harris commented: "I want to commend the entire community and all project partners on reaching this important milestone. I have no doubt this facility will be a valued resource for many years to come, promoting health and fitness for people of all ages and abilities... This hub will help ensure athletes have the opportunity to thrive and stands as proof that our investment in sport is supporting growth and participation."
Minister O'Donovan added: "The Enniscorthy Sports Hub project will be a key regional facility for Wexford, supporting local clubs, schools, aspiring athletes, while also attracting events and visitors to the area."
Meanwhile, Minister James Browne noted that the new facility will also make Wexford "a destination for all sorts of sporting events" and highlighted how he was proud to be attending the ceremony as "we mark the beginning of a new chapter for sport in Wexford."
