W Doherty Construction Ltd has successfully completed public realm enhancements and the installation of public artwork in Bundoran, County Donegal.
The works were carried out on behalf of Donegal County Council, in partnership with Fáilte Ireland, as part of the Destination Towns Capital Investment Scheme.
The €500,000 project included upgrading access routes within the town, improving the streetscape, installing public artwork, and introducing new wayfinding signage. Enhancements were made to Renisan's Lane, Central Lane, and Meehan's Lane, creating shared spaces for both vehicles and pedestrians and improving connections between Main Street and the Wild Atlantic Way shoreline.
Three approach roundabouts to the town now feature marine and surfing-themed sculptures by artist Kevin Callaghan. New wayfinding signage has been installed to direct visitors to Bundoran’s main attractions.
Paul Doherty Architects provided design services for the project, which has improved Bundoran's amenities and appearance and been well received by both residents and visitors.
John G McLaughlin, Chief Executive of Donegal County Council, expressed his appreciation for Fáilte Ireland's continued support of this project and its broader commitment to County Donegal. He praised the design team, contractor and artist for delivering a high-quality public realm project that complements the wider visitor experience.
Joan Crawford, Manager, Wild Atlantic Way, Fáilte Ireland said: "As the National Tourism Development Authority, we aim to grow the number of destinations that offer compelling experiences and attract visitors across the regions. This is why initiatives like the Destination Towns are so important. Our work with Donegal County Council through the scheme has strengthened Bundoran’s appeal as a visitor destination. By improving visitor orientation, and enhancing pedestrian movement and accessibility, visitors will stay longer, spend more and immerse themselves in local activities and culture."
