Timahoe North Solar Farm Officially Launched in Co Kildare

ESB and Bord na Móna have officially launched the Timahoe North Solar Farm in County Kildare, with the support of Darragh O'Brien TD, Minister for Climate, Environment and Energy.

The project, which has been fully operational since early 2025, has an installed capacity of 108MWp. It is now exporting power to Ireland's electricity network, generating enough renewable energy to supply approximately 25,000 homes.

Delivery of the Timahoe North project was made possible through the work of contractors and subcontractors, including Voltalia, H&MV Engineering, S&G Solar Ltd, and Wills Bros Group. Their expertise and input were key to completing this development and connecting it to the grid.

Timahoe North is the first large-scale solar project delivered under the co-development agreement between ESB and Bord na Móna. Together, the partnership will deliver up to 500MW of solar capacity across the Midlands in support of Ireland’s 2030 renewable energy targets.

Darragh O'Brien TD, Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, said: "This project makes a significant contribution to the agreement between both organisations to bring more renewable electricity, in the form of solar, to communities right across the country. For the Midlands region, it is yet another example of how this part of the country can support Ireland as a whole to achieve its ambitious climate targets."

Meanwhile, Paddy Hayes, ESB Chief Executive, outlined how the project will help to support ESB's Net Zero carbon emissions targets: "ESB is delighted to celebrate the opening of Timahoe North by Minister O'Brien together with our partners BnM. Solar is an increasingly important part of Ireland's energy mix and this successful investment at Timahoe North will deliver low carbon electricity for homes, farms and businesses for many years to come."

Tom Donnellan, CEO at Bord na Móna, added: "The launch of Timahoe North marks an important milestone for BnM, as we continue to support Ireland's renewable energy future by developing our 5GW pipeline of sustainable energy systems, including onshore and offshore wind, solar, biomass and biogas projects."

A Community Benefit Fund has also been established, ensuring that the operation of the solar farm contributes to the economic, environmental, social and cultural well-being of the local area.

The project team recognises the contribution of local stakeholders and all who participated in the public consultation process during the development phase.
