Dromin Water Treatment Plant Successfully Upgraded

The Dromin Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in County Kerry has been successfully upgraded following the completion of works by Coffey Construction.

Working in partnership with Uisce Éireann and Kerry County Council, the finished project enhances the plant's capacity and efficiency, securing a reliable drinking water supply for the Listowel area.

Originally built in 1977 and upgraded in 1984, the plant required upgrading to meet today's standards. Coffey's team delivered a series of key improvements to ensure the facility's long-term service, including:

• The plant's six rapid gravity filters were upgraded with new underdrains, filtration media, and a revamped backwashing system. Also included the installation of a new wash water storage tank.

• The installation of a 17kw solar panel array to reduce the plant's carbon footprint.

• New building weathering enclosure and modifications compliant with BCAR to the existing building were completed, inclusive of electrical upgrade, lighting, ventilation, and heating system, and a new fire detection and safety system.

• There were extensive building alterations/modifications of the existing WTP to meet building regulations, fire safety strategy, and accessibility requirements and features updated emergency access routes as part of Part M compliance and new stairway access to filters and settlement tanks, creating a safer and more efficient working environment.

Discussing the works, a statement from Coffey said: "A crucial part of this project was minimising disruption to the operation of the WTP and maintaining a continuous water supply to the local community. The Dromin WTP remained fully operational throughout the upgrade, testing, and commissioning of the upgraded plant, ensuring the local community experienced limited disruption.

"Thanks to the strong support of the local authority, the cooperation of the plant operators and caretakers, the commitment of our project partners, and the dedication of our own project team, this project was successfully brought to a close."
