Donegal County Council's North West Energy Agency (NWEA) has secured €2.66 million in Project Development Services financing through the ELENA Facility under the InvestEU Advisory Hub.
This funding will support the delivery of the 'Donegal Retrofit Mission', a programme designed to scale up energy efficiency improvements across domestic and non-domestic properties in Donegal over the next three to five years.
The NWEA provides practical support for homeowners, businesses, and community organisations undertaking building energy efficiency upgrades. Contractors working with the NWEA will focus on retrofitting buildings, installing renewable heating systems, and fitting solar PV systems. The Agency offers independent advice on suitable energy efficiency measures, funding options including SEAI grants and low-interest loans, and guidance on delivering improvements.
The 'Donegal Retrofit Mission' funding will support the recruitment of four additional staff dedicated to delivering retrofit works, carrying out Building Energy Ratings (BER) to assess current property performance, and producing detailed retrofit reports. These reports provide contractors and property owners with recommended works, estimated costs, expected energy savings, and potential carbon reductions.
The project also includes enhanced marketing and communications to engage homeowners, businesses, and communities, including public events, media campaigns, webinars, and digital resources.
Between 2025 and 2028, the NWEA aims to expand its retrofit and renewable energy programmes, collaborating with property owners and contractors to implement energy efficiency improvements across Donegal.
