NIE Networks Begins £250m Rebuild Of Electricity Infrastructure

NIE Networks has begun a major programme of works to rebuild and modernise Northern Ireland's electricity network.

Labelled as a "once in a generation" rebuild, the six-year project, valued at around £250 million, will be carried out by NIE Networks teams and their contracting partners and is already underway in several areas.

The programme will see approximately 14,000km of the distribution network rebuilt or refurbished, including 1,500km of 11kV overhead lines each year. Work involves replacing poles, conductors and transformers, as well as restringing overhead lines. New overhead lines will also be constructed, and the capacity and resilience of the low voltage and 33kV networks will be increased.

The aim is to create a stronger, more reliable system that can meet both current demand and future requirements.

Con Feeney, National Programmes Director for NIE Networks, said: "The Rebuild programme will future-proof the electricity network throughout Northern Ireland delivering a more robust and resilient network with quicker access and more capacity for current and future customers, as we look towards a decarbonised future. The electricity network is a key economic driver so it’s important that the infrastructure supports Northern Ireland’s long-term growth and can facilitate both domestic and business future needs.

"This is an extensive programme and it will involve some disruption for customers, however, we are committed to working collaboratively with customers and stakeholders to ensure the impact is mitigated as much as possible. This includes supplying customers from other circuits, carrying out some work using Live Line technology, and exploring new alternatives to turning customers' electricity off such as high voltage and low voltage generation and high voltage Live Line pole changing."

The work will run across NIE Networks' RP7 price control period and is designed to ensure the electricity system is fit for purpose in the years ahead.

To inform customers and businesses, NIE Networks is launching the Big Network Rebuild Campaign across billboards, TV and radio. Further details on the areas scheduled for work in 2025 will be available on the company's website next week. In the meantime, enquiries can be made via WhatsApp on 03457 643 643.
