Martins Construction Ltd has broken ground on the expansion of Thomond RFC's facilities at Fitzgerald Park in Moyross, Limerick.
A sod turning event marked the official start of the project that will deliver upgraded playing and training areas for the club, with Limerick City and County Council appointing Martins to carry out the works.
The development, coordinated by the Regeneration, Sports & Recreation Directorate at Limerick City and County Council, is funded through the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage under the Limerick Regeneration Framework Implementation Plan.
The scope of works includes the delivery of a full-sized rugby pitch meeting IRFU requirements, a new training area, demolition of the existing boundary wall, construction of a new boundary to the extension, associated paths and steps, as well as foul drainage and utility diversions. The project is scheduled for completion in early 2026.
Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, said the sod turning represents another milestone for Moyross and welcomed the improved facilities for Thomond RFC. Meanwhile, Cllr Catherine Slattery highlighted the benefits of collaboration between the council and community groups, while Acting Director of Regeneration Declan White spoke about the importance of supporting sport in the Northside of the city.
Thomond RFC Trustee, Eddie Hughes, described the development as a vital step for the club, enabling it to overcome space limitations and expand opportunities for players and the local community.
