SSE Applies To Extend Operational Life Of Cork Wind Farm

SSE Renewables is submitting a planning application to Cork County Council to extend the operational life of Coomatallin Wind Farm, a four-turbine, 6MW facility located 7km south of Dunmanway and 3.5km east of Drinagh in West Cork.

The wind farm has been operational since early 2006. The proposal seeks to extend the wind farm's life beyond its current 20-year planning permission. No changes are proposed to the number or size of the turbines. If approved, the extension would allow Coomatallin to continue generating renewable energy and supporting the local community until 2046.

Coomatallin Wind Farm produces enough energy to supply over 4,000 homes annually while displacing approximately 3,925 tonnes of CO₂ each year. Continued operation would also sustain commercial rates payments to Cork County Council and contributions from the Coomatallin Community Fund, which has supported local projects with nearly €290,000 in funding since 2006.

Ciaran Maguire, Onshore Wind O&M General Manager Ireland for SSE Renewables, said: "Coomatallin Wind Farm has been generating clean, home-grown energy in West Cork since 2006, and with this proposed life extension it has the potential to continue supporting Ireland's ambitious climate and energy targets well into the future. Just as importantly, securing an extended operational life would allow us to sustain the positive impact of the Coomatallin Community Fund, ensuring that local groups and initiatives in West Cork can continue to benefit for many more years to come."
