The refurbishment and extension of Inchicore Library at Richmond Barracks in Dublin has been completed, delivering a modernised facility for the local community.
The project, carried out by Dublin City Council Libraries and Architects, has transformed the space into an area three times larger than the temporary library first opened in 2020.
Speaking at the launch of the updated library, the Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Ray McAdam said: "I am delighted to mark the official opening of Inchicore Library. Libraries are vital public spaces at the heart of our communities. This new library is a modern, universally accessible community space, and I look forward to seeing the exciting new services that will be delivered for the people of Inchicore."
The City Librarian, Mairead Owens, added: "Delivering an enhanced community library for the people of Inchicore has been a key ambition for the DCC Libraries. This project has delivered on that ambition, providing much needed, free, open and universally accessible space for all. The new library should also contribute positively to the wider regeneration strategy for Inchicore and creates a strong civic focal point for the area."
As Richmond Barracks is a protected heritage site, the works required a careful balance between restoration and modernisation. Original walls and windows were repaired with sensitivity to the building’s character, while upgrades such as power sockets, a new lighting scheme, and fixed shelving were integrated without compromising its historic fabric.
The interior fit-out has been designed to meet a wide range of user needs. Features include study desks, laptop lending facilities, a dedicated teen area, additional seating, and a new Junior Library section, marked by the custom 'Inchicore Railway' arch.
This redevelopment also allows for future service improvements, including increased opening hours, more study spaces, and the introduction of sensory equipment for public use.
Inchicore Library is now open to the public from Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
