Refurbishment and extension works at the former Ballymote Courthouse in County Sligo have been approved in principle by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht.
The project, led by Sligo County Council, will see the historic building adapted and extended to provide a new public library for Ballymote.
The development involves major construction and conservation works, balancing modern requirements with the protection of the building's heritage. Plans include a new extension, as well as internal works to create reading and IT areas, creative and maker spaces, and shared facilities designed to serve the community. Conservation measures are also being undertaken under the Heritage Council’s Historic Towns Initiative 2025, covering reinstatement of natural slate roofing and timber windows to preserve the character of the original structure.
Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Cllr Dónal Gilroy, said: "This is a fantastic development for Ballymote and the wider South Sligo area. Libraries are more than just buildings—they are community hubs, places of learning, creativity, and connection. I'm proud that Sligo County Council is investing in a project that will serve generations to come while honouring the heritage of this landmark building."
The refurbishment is also a key element of the Town Centre First Policy in Ballymote, which aims to deliver coordinated regeneration through investment in public buildings and services. Sligo County Council will now move forward with detailed design, planning, and costings, ensuring best value while keeping the local community informed as the project progresses.
