Construction is set to begin on the Waterford Road Pedestrian and Cyclist Improvement Scheme in County Kilkenny, following the completion of detailed design and planning.
Kilkenny County Council has secured funding through the National Transport Authority's Active Travel Programme to deliver upgraded pedestrian and cycling facilities along the route.
The scheme is being carried out in two phases. Phase One will upgrade footpaths and introduce segregated cycle facilities between the Waterford Road Roundabout and the LIDL/ALDI roundabout. A dedicated school bus bay will be provided for the Kilkenny School Project, alongside two new pedestrian crossings serving the Springfields and Hollybank areas.
Phase Two covers improvements between the Waterford Road/Bohernatounish Road intersection and the Nuncio Road Roundabout. This will include upgraded footpaths and cycle facilities, safer roundabout crossings with pedestrian and cyclist access on all arms, and a school bus bay for Presentation Secondary School.
The project aims to improve connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists, create calmer traffic environments near schools and busy junctions, and enhance overall road safety. Construction is scheduled to commence in October.
