The €7 million upgrade of Newport's wastewater treatment plant, County Mayo, has been completed, enhancing capacity and efficiency to serve a population equivalent of 3,600.
The project involved extensive construction work, including the installation of two new screened stormwater chambers, a new inlet works, a stormwater storage tank, secondary treatment with final settlement tanks, and updated electrical controls.
The upgrade improves water quality in the Mulkear River and ensures the plant meets national and European wastewater regulations.
Paul Fallon, Portfolio Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: "The completion of this project is a significant step in ensuring modern, efficient wastewater infrastructure that supports the needs of the community while protecting the local environment. This investment will improve water quality in the Mulkear River, ensure regulatory compliance, and support sustainable growth in the area.
"Newport is one of a series of key investments being made across Tipperary to upgrade wastewater infrastructure, supporting communities to grow and thrive while reinforcing our commitment to environmental protection."
This project is part of a wider programme of wastewater infrastructure upgrades across Tipperary, including recent works in Ballina and Cahir.
