Work is now underway on a €29 million upgrade of Lough Mask (Tourmakeady) Water Treatment Plant, one of the largest water facilities in Mayo, Roscommon and Galway.
The project, delivered by Veolia Water on behalf of Uisce Éireann, will enhance water quality, security of supply, and provide capacity for an additional 20,000 homes.
The plant currently produces around 40 million litres of clean drinking water per day, supplying Castlebar, parts of Westport, and multiple towns and villages across the region, including numerous group water schemes. Following completion, expected in 2028, output will increase to 50 million litres per day, supporting continued growth in housing, business, and tourism.
Uisce Éireann's Programme Manager, Ian Walsh, outlined the benefits: the upgrade will modernise treatment processes, expand capacity, and ensure a safe, sustainable, and resilient water supply for the region.
Veolia Water's team on site includes long-serving plant operatives with deep connections to Lough Mask. Their experience and dedication are central to delivering the upgrade efficiently and safely.
The project is part of Uisce Éireann's ongoing investment in critical water infrastructure, enabling communities to thrive and supporting sustainable growth.
