Derry City and Strabane District Council has reaffirmed its commitment to the A5 Western Transport Corridor following a meeting yesterday (October 2) between Mayor Cllr Ruairí McHugh, Northern Ireland Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins, and representatives from neighbouring councils.
The discussions in Belfast centred on the urgent need to progress the major road project, which remains a top priority for Derry City and Strabane, Fermanagh and Omagh, Mid Ulster, Monaghan and Donegal County Councils. All parties underlined the A5's strategic importance for transport, safety and economic development across the region.
Mayor McHugh said the delegation backed the Minister's appeal against the recent High Court ruling that has temporarily delayed the scheme, stressing the need for swift resolution so construction can move ahead.
"The A5 Western Transport Corridor is not merely about upgrading a road, it is about saving lives, fostering economic prosperity, and connecting our communities more effectively," he said. "I welcome the collaborative effort and the united support from the councils sends a strong and clear message that we all stand together with our cross-border partners to ensure the A5 is delivered. This project is a key artery for our entire Northwest region, and its completion is essential for our future. We will continue to support the Minister in her efforts to resolve the current legal challenges."
He added that Derry City and Strabane District Council would continue to work closely with neighbouring authorities to push forward delivery of the scheme, describing it as vital infrastructure for the Northwest and beyond.
