Northern Ireland Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has praised Department for Infrastructure (DfI) teams for their work last Friday and over the weekend to deal with the effects of Storm Amy.

The Minister confirmed that the storm caused "significant" damage from severe winds and heavy rain, impacting major roads, including the M1, M2, and M22, with fallen trees and debris.

Scale of the Incidents

Ms Kimmins highlighted the scale of the response, with a total of 1,457 incidents reported across Northern Ireland:

• 1,018 obstructions, such as fallen trees.

• Over 350 flooding incidents.

The Minister paid tribute to DfI staff and all multi-agency partners who were on the frontline during "very dangerous and challenging times".

She noted that their "unseen but essential" work involved:

• Clearing affected parts of the road network.

• Mitigating flooding through proactive measures.

• Maintaining critical drainage infrastructure.

• Restoring power and water supplies.

• Getting the public transport network back to normal.

The Minister concluded that the efforts were vital in "reconnecting our communities and making our road network safe".
