First Phase Of Maghera Public Realm Scheme Complete

CivCo has completed the first phase of Maghera's £4 million public realm regeneration project, delivering a significant upgrade to the County L'Derry-based town centre.

Commissioned and partly funded by Mid Ulster District Council, with additional support from the UK Government, the scheme has revitalised the central streets with new paving, street lighting, tree planting and street furniture. It also addresses previous footpath constraints and improves pedestrian accessibility throughout the town.

Additional enhancements, supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, included high-quality materials, street furniture, traffic signalisation, a tannoy system, a touch-screen visitor information point, and a festive tree. The works were complemented by a carriageway resurfacing scheme delivered by the Department for Infrastructure.

Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Frances Burton welcomed the improvements: "The completion of the Public Realm Scheme is a significant milestone in the Maghera Regeneration Programme as a whole, marking the start of physically realising our vision for Maghera. It has transformed the heart of the town, making it a safer, more accessible destination and a more bright and modern public space for residents and visitors alike.

"I want to thank everyone involved in this project, including RPS, the design team; CivCo the contractors for their high-quality work; our residents, businesses and commuters for their patience; and the UK Government for their support and commitment to both Maghera’s present and future."

Una Morgan, Chair of the Maghera Town Centre Forum, added that the improvements have enhanced access and made it easier for residents and visitors to experience the town, supporting local businesses and encouraging further footfall.

The Council has secured £9.1 million from the UK Government to support ongoing regeneration in Maghera, including the public realm scheme, redevelopment of the former High School site as a Business Park, and the creation of a Wetland Park. With additional Council funding, the total investment in Maghera now exceeds £10 million, combining planning, design, and management of public spaces to support both community well-being and future economic growth.
