Ward and Burke Construction Ltd has begun a significant infrastructure upgrade at the Limerick Wastewater Treatment Plant (WTP) in Bunlicky, County Limerick, on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

The project, known as the Interim Sludge Project, will modernise the plant's sludge treatment facilities and replace ageing infrastructure to ensure continued reliable service for the region.

In operation since 2003, the Limerick WTP processes both local and imported wastewater sludges. The new works will see the removal and replacement of three deteriorating steel sludge storage tanks, each fitted with new fibreglass roofs and internal protective linings. To improve efficiency, Ward and Burke will also install a new import screen, pump sump, and associated pipework to optimise sludge intake and protect equipment from debris.

The project also includes the addition of an odour extraction unit to improve air quality on site, creating a cleaner and safer working environment.

Speaking on the upgrade, Angus Hall, of Uisce Éireann said: "The upgrade is expected to deliver multiple benefits. It will secure the continued acceptance of municipal sludges and reduce the risk of operational disruptions. The new import screen will also help protect vital equipment by filtering out debris before it enters the system."
