CivCo, on behalf of NI Water, is set to begin a £400,000 wastewater infrastructure upgrade in the Fanad Drive, Creggan Heights and Blighs Lane area of L'Derry later this month.
The project involves installing a dedicated stormwater pipeline to divert rainwater from the combined wastewater network, reducing the risk of sewer flooding and providing additional local network capacity.
The works will see approximately 300 metres of new stormwater pipe laid and ten new manholes constructed between No. 50 Fanad Drive and Glassagh Park, including connections to existing infrastructure in Swilly Gardens. Pipelaying is scheduled to start on Monday, October 20, and is expected to take around 13 weeks, allowing for a two-week Christmas break.
To ensure safety and maintain traffic flow, CivCo will implement a detailed traffic management plan throughout the project. Key traffic arrangements include a temporary road closure on Fanad Drive for around four weeks, a closure on Creggan Heights for six weeks, and a lane closure on Blighs Lane for approximately three weeks. Signed diversion routes and temporary traffic lights will be in place to maintain access for residents.
NI Water and the project team from AtkinsRéalis and CivCo have carried out a communications programme with local residents and will continue to provide updates as work progresses. Safety signage will be installed across the sites, and the public is advised to stay clear of all construction areas.
This project forms part of ongoing investigations and improvements to Northern Ireland's combined sewerage network, helping reduce flood risk and supporting local development in the Fanad Drive area.
