Portlaw in County Waterford is set to undergo a major regeneration with a €1 million grant awarded through the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF).
Waterford City and County Council will lead the delivery of Phase 1 of the town's regeneration plan, which targets previously neglected areas including the derelict courthouse.
The regeneration scheme, prepared in 2023 by consultant Paul Hogart and Company in collaboration with the Portlaw Town Team and local stakeholders, focuses on creating a new town quarter. The project will involve land acquisition, appointment of a design team, preparation of detailed design drawings and specifications, and securing planning consent. Future phases will include construction, with the aim of revitalising the town centre and supporting housing development.
Key outcomes of the project include the preservation of historic buildings, the establishment of a new community hub, the reduction of vacant and derelict properties, and the creation of new housing opportunities. The development is also expected to stimulate private investment, including progress on the Tannery site.
The Department of Rural and Community Development is providing €1 million through the RRDF, with additional support from Waterford City and County Council. The council acknowledges the contribution of the Portlaw Town Team and local community, whose ongoing involvement is central to the project's success.
