Offaly County Council, working with Daingean Town Hall and Daingean Town Hall Restoration Committees, has launched the Daingean Court House Conservation Masterplan, setting out the future for the landmark protected structure in the centre of Daingean.
The Masterplan, prepared by Howley, Hayes, Cooney Architects on behalf of the council, identifies key areas of conservation, outlines proposed uses and details costings for future development. The plan focuses on preserving the building's historic character while ensuring it is accessible and functional for modern community use. Consultation with the local community was a central part of the process.
On October 10, Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Darragh Calleary TD, announced funding approval of €425,334 under Category 2 of the Rural Regeneration Development Fund. This investment will support the appointment of a Conservation Architect-led Design Team to advance the Masterplan proposals to detailed design stage and prepare a planning application.
The total project cost is €531,668, which includes €106,334 (20%) match funding from Offaly County Council, sourced through the Local Property Tax as committed by the Council’s Elected Members. The Conservation Masterplan itself was funded through the Town and Village Renewal Scheme from the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht.
Offaly County Council will continue to work closely with the Daingean community and project committees as the development moves into the design and planning phase. The restoration of Daingean Courthouse (Town Hall) is seen as a key step in creating a functional, sustainable community hub for the town and surrounding area.
