Mayo County Council has secured €2,346,700 in funding for three major construction and regeneration projects under the Rural Regeneration Development Fund (RRDF).
The projects, announced by Minister Dara Calleary on October 10, 2025, will focus on improving public spaces, restoring heritage buildings, and creating new community facilities across the county.
The funding will support the following developments:
• In Béal an Mhuirthead, €663,100 has been allocated for a project that includes public realm improvements, the restoration of a former vocational school into a community hub, and the construction of a new library;
• In Swinford, €869,800 will fund the creation of a new public square and marketplace, alongside the refurbishment and deep retrofit of a derelict Georgian-era former presbytery into a community resource centre;
• On Inishturk Island, €813,800 has been granted for a multi-purpose hub and glamping site designed to enhance the built environment and create sustainable local employment.
The RRDF funding is aimed at rejuvenating town centres, increasing footfall, addressing dereliction, and supporting long-term economic growth in rural areas.
Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Sean Carey, said: "These three exceptional projects—in Béal an Mhuirthead, Swinford, and Inishturk—will bring real benefits to our communities, enhancing public spaces, restoring heritage buildings, and supporting sustainable development.
"This investment is a strong endorsement of the vision and energy driving rural Mayo forward and into a brighter future."
Chief Executive Kevin Kelly added: "This investment in three transformative projects across our county reflect the creativity and ambition of Mayo County Council and the local communities which Mayo County Council is proud to support.
"We look forward to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure their successful delivery and long-term impact."
