John McQuillan Contracts Ltd has been appointed to carry out the first phase of the West Belfast Greenway, with work set to start on Monday, October 20.

This initial phase, part of the wider Belfast Cycling Network, will focus on upgrading paths through Bog Meadows Nature Reserve, a Site of Local Nature Conservation Importance (SLNCI).

The scheme includes careful removal of some ash trees and hedgerows, creation of new ponds to support wetland flora and fauna, and edge treatments designed to complement the surrounding grassland. The works are expected to take around 27 weeks, though progress will be influenced by weather conditions and the need for sensitive excavation throughout the site.

Certain paths within Bog Meadows will be temporarily closed to ensure public safety, with signage in place to guide visitors. In addition to the construction work, John McQuillan Contracts Ltd will undertake conservation activities in partnership with Ulster Wildlife to support the site's ecology.

Announcing the commencement of construction, Northern Ireland Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said: "This project marks the beginning of a multi million pound transformative active travel route designed to offer a predominantly traffic-free walking and cycling corridor connecting West Belfast to the City Centre.

"The Bog Meadows is a vital haven for nature and biodiversity in the heart if the city. My Department has worked closely with Ulster Wildlife throughout the development of the scheme, ensuring that measures are in place to protect the site's natural habitats while enhancing accessibility for the local community and visitors."

The Minister added: "I would like to thank the public for their cooperation as we work to deliver this important project, which will enhance both local connectivity and help to ensure that the Bog Meadows are accessible for all to enjoy into the future."
