The Rockey Road Improvement Scheme in Wicklow Town has been completed, delivering upgraded pedestrian facilities, enhanced road safety and improved traffic flow.
The project, funded by the Department of Transport with an investment of €1.3 million, was finished in the third quarter of 2025, and the road reopened to the public on October 15, 2025.
The scheme involved realigning the existing road to a consistent width of 5.5 metres, installing 420 metres of new footpath between the Carrig Beag Housing Development and the M11, and enhancing safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Additional improvements included 17 new public lights, one zebra crossing, two speed ramps and two speed driver feedback signs.
Designed to support residential developments along the Wicklow Town Outer Relief Road, the upgrade provides an alternative route that helps reduce congestion on main roads into and out of Wicklow Town and Rathnew.
Speaking at the official opening, Tánaiste Simon Harris said: "The opening of the Rockey Road Improvement Scheme marks a transformative step for Wicklow and Rathnew—reducing congestion, improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and strengthening the connection between our communities for generations to come. This project is a testament to what can be achieved through local leadership, government support and community cooperation."
Wicklow County Council representatives, including Cathaoirleach Cllr Melanie Corrigan and Chief Executive Emer O'Gorman, praised the project and acknowledged the work of those involved in delivering a safer, better road for the community.
